Breakfast /Bottega

This is just a minor homage to one of my favourite spots in Jo’burg, because it’s long overdue and they deserve it.
Breakfast and everything else will always be at Bottega. I like many other places but in a “ching chong cha” Bottega trumps most things because
a)      Food is delicious ( breakfast as above, lunch –try burgers, ribs, dinner fillet porcini
b)      They are friendly (these guys once passed a Love letter to a crush for me,-I was young and wild- and that’s an excuse J )
c)       Wine is great (many, many blotto texts )
d)      Ambiance (might we be in Italy? Nah, not really, but it is the thought that counts)
e)      Food is delicious (Trust!)

Breath

“ and I wonder if Beethoven held his breath
the first time his fingers touched the keys
the same way a soldier holds his breath
the first time his finger clicks the trigger.
We all have different reasons for forgetting to breathe.”

She was incomprehensible

"She was incomprehensible, for, in her, soul and spirit were one - the beauty of her body was the essence of her soul. She was that unity sought for by philosophers through many centuries. In this outdoor waiting room of winds and stars she had been sitting for a hundred years, at peace in the contemplation of herself."

F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Beautiful and Damned

All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes

“If the heart of Africa remained elusive, my search for it had brought me closer to understanding myself and other human beings.

The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned. It impels mighty ambitions and dangerous capers.

We amass great fortunes at the cost of our souls, or risk our lives in drug dens from London’s Soho, to San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury.

We shout in Baptist churches, wear yarmulkes and wigs and argue even the tiniest points in the Torah, or worship the sun and refuse to kill cows for the starving.

Hoping that by doing these things, home will find us acceptable or failing that, that we will forget our awful yearning for it.”
